District Wine Storage signs lease for first location
WASHINGTON, DC – April 17, 2025 - JLL announced today the lease signing of District Wine Storage (DWS) to Tishman Speyer-owned and managed 1919 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW in Washington, DC. In a unique approach to adaptive reuse, the specialty wine storage will take 8,000 square feet of climate-controlled, lower-level storage space for fine wine collectors and restaurants.
“This is a great example of converting lower-level office space into a creative adaptive reuse for specialty wine storage,” stated James Cahill, Executive Managing Director, JLL. “Fine wine collectors who do not have climate-controlled wine cellars in their homes, those who have run out of space in their home cellars, or some of Washington’s top fine dining restaurants, now have a very convenient downtown Washington, DC location to store their wine.”
District Wine Storage founders, Justin Bonner and Kevin Shin, spent a collective 45 years in technology services and government contracting before transitioning their shared life passion and interest in wine into a business venture. While Shin continues to operate a world-recognized online wine retailer, Winovisor, Bonner is the owner/operator of Jailbreak Brewing & Foodworks, one of Maryland’s largest breweries and destination artisanal restaurant. With an acute shortage of qualified and safe wine storage space both residentially and commercially in DC and the surrounding market, DWS was founded as an opportunity for consumers, collectors and local restaurants to extend the footprint of their collections while ensuring optimum conditions by which to age their investments properly.
“Tishman Speyer was not only interested in us as a customer, but was also excited to explore our business model as a potential amenity they could offer to their other DC tenants. We’re excited to have them as partners and are looking forward to opening our inaugural location alongside them,” noted Justin Bonner, Co-Founder, DWS.
“Our recent renovations and amenity package at 1919 Pennsylvania speak to our commitment to hospitality,” said Daniel Dooley, Managing Director, Tishman Speyer. “We are thrilled to welcome District Wine Storage - a unique operator that wonderfully complements our overall environment and vibrant community.”
Located in the heart of Washington, DC and overlooking James Monroe Park, 1919 Pennsylvania Avenue is surrounded by some of the city’s best hotels, restaurants and shops. Originally constructed in 1979, Tishman Speyer recently completed an extensive renovation program at the 285,200-square-foot tower. Upgrades include a new rooftop terrace and a redesigned lobby that features open lounge areas, communal tables, a coffee station and an expansive conference center that can host up to 160 guests. Tishman Speyer also updated the fitness center, rooftop terrace and added a conference facility.
In anticipation of filling the space quickly, DWS is already seeking additional space in and around the DC Metro area for a second location.
In addition to Cahill, JLL’s Anna Lee Ware represented District Wine Storage. Tishman Speyer’s Dan Dooley and KLNB’s Kim Stein and Jennifer Price represented 1919 Pennsylvania Avenue.
