What drew you to sustainability?
I've always been interested in the sciences. I was a double major in biology and environmental studies in college. I knew that with sustainability being such a broad topic, I wasn't interested in being a forester or anything involving being outdoors. For me, it was more about understanding the intersectionality between how humans influence the environment. So, through various courses, I was more exposed to building construction and other environmental science just to understand the impact and just by my growing interest in the field, sustainability essentially chose me.
How have you seen your work make a difference?
I’ve seen clients reduce the operational costs of their buildings. I’ve seen tenant satisfaction increase because they’re happier after green practices and operations are incorporated within the building’s space. Also, it's great to see the clients themselves get very excited about incorporating sustainability and finding out what else they can do to move it to the next level.
What would you say to someone considering a career in sustainability?
Don't hesitate. Definitely jump at the opportunity once it presents itself. Sustainability is a very broad topic and there are so many areas to get involved in.
