Perspectives podcast: Building community in the workplace
In the latest episode of the Flex for Thought series, part of the JLL Perspectives podcast, host Tashi Dorjee, Head of Flex at JLL sat down with Oscar McMahon, co-founder of Young Henrys Brewing, to explore how authentic community building can transform workspaces and enhance employee experience.
Community starts with shared values
"Community is a legitimate transfer of things between like-minded people," explains McMahon. The conversation revealed that successful community building - whether for a brewery or an office building - requires understanding what brings people together. This means identifying shared values rather than simply adding trendy amenities.
Give before you expect to receive
One of Young Henrys' core principles applies perfectly to workplace environments: "For your community to support you, you first must do something for your community." McMahon suggests that businesses looking to create meaningful connections should focus first on what they can offer their people, rather than what they expect in return.
Create continuity, not contrast
The episode highlighted a key challenge facing today's workplaces - the disconnect between work environments and social spaces. "You can't put beanbags in your work and then have this strict, regimented, non-collaborative thing," notes McMahon. Instead, successful spaces create a seamless experience throughout the day.
Involve people in the design process
Rather than guessing what employees want, McMahon advocates for a consultative approach: "If you give your people the opportunity and the equity to give their opinion, they'll give it to you." This collaborative process helps create spaces that truly reflect what matters to the people using them.
