Standard Chartered and JLL Win Net Zero Partnership Award
Achievements:
Carbon Reduction: The partnership achieved remarkable results across Standard Chartered’s global portfolio, spanning more than 30 markets. Through systematic sustainability initiatives, the team eliminated 12,850 tonnes of CO₂ annually—equivalent to powering over 17,000 homes a year. This 84% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions showcases the potential for meaningful environmental progress when organisations commit to comprehensive decarbonisation strategies.
Operating Models: Beyond carbon reduction, the partnership delivered tangible operational improvements. The team achieved a 30% reduction in occupied space whilst enhancing workplace functionality, proving that environmental responsibility and operational efficiency work in tandem.
Energy Independence: Energy generation initiatives have been equally impressive. With 4,000 solar panels generating 2,000 kW peak of renewable energy, this substantial capacity represents a significant step towards energy independence whilst reducing reliance on grid electricity. The renewable infrastructure provides long-term operational benefits alongside immediate environmental impact.
Waste Management: The partnership secured True Zero Waste Platinum certification—the first of its kind in Africa. This certification represents the highest standard in waste management practices, from implementing advanced recycling systems to eliminating single use plastics across dozens of sites.
Local Ecosystems: Carbon sequestration efforts complemented direct emissions reductions through ambitious tree planting. The partnership has planted over one million trees, creating natural carbon sinks that provide long-term environmental benefits whilst supporting local ecosystems and communities.
Rainwater Harvesting: Innovation remained central to success, with solutions tailored to local contexts. Rainwater harvesting systems in Kenya exemplify this approach, addressing regional water challenges whilst reducing environmental impact. These innovations show how global sustainability strategies must adapt to specific market conditions and opportunities.
“This partnership demonstrates how collaboration can drive real environmental impact at scale. It shows what’s possible when organisations collaborate to amplify impact through shared expertise, resources, and commitment,” said Steve Lawlor, Divisional President at JLL, who received the Lifetime Achievement Award on the same night for his exceptional 30+ year career contributions to facilities management. “This partnership delivers value beyond environmental metrics, creating operational efficiencies, cost savings, and enhanced reputation. Most importantly, it provides a replicable framework for organisations seeking sustainability transformation through strategic partnerships that deliver lasting organisational and community value.”
