Purpose isn't a poster. It's the compass for our toughest decisions

We see the word ‘purpose’ everywhere these days. From a headline in business journals to a key slide in our strategy decks. But what separates purpose that truly inspires from one that simply decorates an office wall?
According to me, purpose is only as powerful as the decisions it guides. Its real test lies in the tough calls. Does our purpose influence who we bring into our teams, the investments we make or even the clients we choose to partner with? If it doesn’t actively impact these trade-offs, it risks becoming purely symbolic, a hollow echo in our town halls.
A purpose must have weight. It must have consequences
This isn't just a top-down corporate exercise; it's deeply personal. Today, more than ever, people are looking for meaning - a 'why' that resonates beyond their job description. When we can successfully connect a company’s purpose to an individual's personal values, something incredible happens. Engagement deepens; a sense of ownership flourishes and people choose to stay and grow. Work begins to feel like a meaningful contribution to something larger than themselves.
So, how do we build this bridge, especially across a diverse and distributed workforce like JLL?
As I said before, it’s not through grand announcements or glossy posters. Purpose is felt in the small, everyday moments. It’s in the way a leader listens, the feedback they give and the integrity they show when no one is watching. Culture becomes authentic when our leaders don’t just talk about our purpose but consistently model it in their behaviours. Their actions are, by far, the most powerful form of communication we have.
Of course, in a world that’s constantly changing, purpose can’t be static. At JLL, the core of who we are at remains constant, but how we express that purpose evolves. In fact, our Accelerate 2030 strategy epitomises this quite well.
By harnessing the power of data, a unified platform and AI, we’re enabling teams to move with clarity and pace - taking insight and translating it into action that truly benefits our clients, our people and our communities. Here, purpose is more than intent; it’s embedded in every decision, powered by information but brought to life through human judgment and relationships.
It’s our roadmap for translating JLL's enduring purpose - shaping the future of real estate for a better world - into tangible actions that address the challenges and opportunities of today and tomorrow. It ensures our purpose remains a living, breathing part of our organisation.
Building a purpose-driven organisation is a journey. It means consistently aligning choices, empowering people and staying true to why we exist, even as the world keeps transforming.
