Our Women of Defence : Leilani House
Leilani House is a Procurement Analyst at JLL, working on the Defence account. Before joining in 2018, she was a content coordinator in the travel industry. In her seven years with JLL, Leilani has become an integral part of our procurement team nationally.
Based in Brisbane, Leilani supports the National Defence account team by administering the procurement activities for the Defence Estate Work Program projects. Her responsibilities include managing the Defence tender process, ensuring compliance, assuring probity, conducting tender evaluations, executing contracts and providing debriefs.
In her role, Leilani advises project managers on appropriate procurement methods and requirements. She assists in preparing tender documentation, administers the tender process and ensures compliance of tender submissions. Leilani chairs all tender evaluation board meetings for Defence projects, reviews tender responses and is involved in the evaluation process. After the Tender Board makes a decision, she writes the Tender Evaluation Board report with a recommendation for the preferred tenderer to the client (Defence). She also issues contracts and leads negotiation processes. Leilani's work ensures probity and correct processes are followed from design to delivery, maintaining the integrity and reputation of both JLL and Defence.
It's the diversity of her day-to-day and the people that she works with that Leilani enjoys the most of her role. The supportive team environment has nurtured her communication and relationship management skills, whilst allowing her the flexibility to work wherever she needs to meet her family and work obligations. Whether that be on site at Defence bases, from a JLL office or at home. This flexibility has empowered her to work across over 130 Estate Works Program (EWP) projects. With no two projects the same, Leilani’s developed her skills in contract analysis, compliance and procurement practices. She has also enjoyed learning about all the different sectors and people that make up the Defence that you just wouldn’t encounter or have exposure to if you didn’t work with them as a client.
Returning to work from parental leave can be a challenging experience, and for Leilani this was coupled with navigating post-COVID restrictions. With many changes and shifting priorities during that period, Leilani felt well supported by her team and managers to ensure she could balance being a new parent and working part-time.
Leilani's career growth to becoming a Procurement Analyst at JLL, working on the Defence account, demonstrates how diverse experiences and a proactive approach to learning can result in a satisfying and meaningful career. By leveraging transferable skills, a positive attitude, and effective communication, Leilani upholds the integrity and reputation of both JLL and Defence.
