Our Women of Defence : Katerina Madis
Katerina Madis, a Project Manager in Adelaide, has just celebrated a decade with JLL's Defence team. Her journey began in March 2015, continuing her involvement with the Defence sector under JLL's new contract. Katerina recognised the opportunity for growth and impact within this dynamic environment and seized it.
As a Project Manager delivering projects under the Estate Works Program, Katerina maintains and improves Defence assets nationwide. Her background having been a registered architect provides a unique perspective. Her architectural experience allows for creative solutions when managing budget constraints, competing stakeholder needs, and diverse parties, from contractors to consultants.
"Defence is a dynamic space with a vast array of projects," Katerina explains. "From civil works to building upgrades, each Defence unit has unique needs, making for a continuously challenging and interesting portfolio."
Katerina's expertise was invaluable during the COVID-19 pandemic when government stimulus efforts led to a surge in Defence projects. "This was a difficult period that taxed the team as we had to manage a vast portfolio very quickly," Katerina recalls. Despite the pressure, her team adapted, maintaining crucial Defence infrastructure.
Over her tenure, Katerina has observed significant changes within JLL's Defence account. "In the last 10 years, I've seen strong growth in the reporting expectations and handover material to the maintenance contractor for Defence,” Katerina notes. “Much of this has been necessary, as changes to building fabric and asset upgrades weren't always successfully captured in the past." However, she also acknowledges the complexity of current deliverables, which now often require specialist consultants to meet handover requirements.
Katerina values the work arrangement flexibility at JLL, which has contributed to her long-standing commitment and work-life balance. She aspires to advance to a senior project management role, demonstrating her dedication to growth within JLL and the Defence sector.
Katerina's work supports Australia's Defence capabilities. "As part of the JLL project management team, we play an important part in maintaining the estate nationally to ensure their assets are meeting the standards for operation," she says. This sense of purpose adds satisfaction to her role.
Having reached her 10-year milestone with JLL in March 2025, Katerina’s story exemplifies the opportunities for growth and impact within JLL's Defence sector.
