JLL's Energy & Infrastructure Advisory (E&IA) team acted as exclusive sell-side M&A advisor to Hansa Battery, a German developer focused on utility scale battery energy storage, on the sale of its 99MW Ready-to-Build (“RtB”) standalone BESS project located near the municipality of Hilgermissen, in Lower Saxony, Germany. Following a competitive process, the asset was acquired by a major IPP specialising in utility-scale renewable energy projects. The transaction involved the sale of 100% of the shares in the project SPV. Commercial operation is expected in H2 2028.
The transaction reflects the continued maturation of Germany’s standalone battery storage market, which has become one of the most active BESS investment sectors in Europe. Germany’s grid infrastructure requirements, combined with the country’s accelerating energy transition, have created a compelling structural need for large-scale, utility-grade storage assets. Furthermore, the 20-year grid-fee exemption applicable to qualifying storage assets commissioned by August 2029 provides a significant additional incentive for investors, supporting strong demand for RtB-stage assets with clear visibility of reaching commercial operation before the regulatory deadline.
Max Stirling, Senior Director, Energy & Infrastructure Advisory, JLL said: "BESS Hilgermissen attracted strong interest from a broad range of international energy transition investors, reflecting the quality of Hansa Battery's development platform and the compelling fundamentals of the German storage market. JLL is proud to have supported Hansa Battery in achieving a successful outcome."
Lyubomir Petrov, Managing Director of Hansa Battery said: "BESS Hilgermissen exemplifies our model as a specialised development boutique, advancing institutional-grade utility-scale battery storage projects with speed and agility while maintaining strong technical and commercial standards. Achieving Ready-to-Build status required our founding team’s expertise and persistence across the full development cycle, from site origination and land securement to engineering and design, legal and regulatory matters, project and stakeholder coordination, and commercial strategy and transaction execution. We are proud of this achievement and that we have gained a strong industrial partner with the capital and capabilities to take the Project into construction and operation, demonstrating how specialised developers and long-term owners can combine their strengths to accelerate the energy transition."
