Global Market Perspective - September 2010

This month's Global Market Perspective focuses on retail markets which, in general, are showing a steady improvement in fundamentals. Global retail sales and consumer confidence are trending up, demand from retailers is strengthening, investors are seeking greater retail exposure, and the shopping centre development market is regaining a degree of momentum.
Cross-border retailers are capitalising on market conditions to resume global expansion plans, while value-retailers are taking up the slack in some secondary locations.  Strongest dynamism can be found in markets such as China, India, Brazil and Turkey where retailers, developers and investors are tapping into favourable demographics.
But while global retail markets are on a much firmer footing than a year ago, the retail landscape over the medium to long term is likely to be more challenging, as the sector goes through a period of dramatic structural change created by increasing consumer empowerment and technological innovation.
