Jones Lang LaSalle Sponsors Great8 Boat at 2012 Head of Charles Regatta

A Historic Assemblage of Olympic and World Rowing Champions

BOSTON, October 17, 2012 – Jones Lang LaSalle is sponsoring the “Great8” boat and team, a historic assemblage of Olympic medalists and world champions from eight countries, at The Head of the Charles Regatta on October 20 and 21, 2012. The 48th Head of the Charles, which will take place across a three-mile course on the Charles River in Boston and Cambridge, is the world’s largest two-day regatta with 9,000 athletes from 20 countries in front of an estimated 300,000 spectators.

Jones Lang LaSalle Executive Managing Director David Slye said: “Following the Olympic success of our sponsored rower, Alan Campbell, who won Bronze in the Single Scull at the recent London Games, we are extremely proud to sponsor a veritable UN of world-class talent in one boat at this legendary event. Even though the team will be competing against the best in the world, we are confident that our team will repeat its 2009 Men’s Championship Eights title.

“The Great8 is a powerful symbol of the value of teamwork, communication and strategy that is as important at Jones Lang LaSalle and in our competitive world of real estate as it is to the success of our rowers."

The Great8 is one of the greatest fields of elite world class rowers ever assembled, including four Gold and Bronze medalists from the recent 2012 London Olympics with a total of 11 Olympics medals.

The Jones Lang LaSalle “Great Eight” crew includes the following members:
Stroke: Iztok Cop (Slovenia), Bronze Medal - 2012 London Olympics; Double Sculls

  • 7: Glenn Ochal (USA), Bronze Medal - 2012 London Olympics; Coxless Four
  • 6: Olaf Tufte (Norway), 9th Place - 2012 London Olympics; Single Sculls
  • 5: Mahe Drysdale (NZ), Gold Medal - 2012 London Olympics; Single Sculls
  • 4: Marcel Hacker (Germany), 6th Place - 2012 London Olympics; Single Sculls
  • 3: Lassi Karonen (Sweden), 4th Place - 2012 London Olympics; Single Sculls
  • 2: Alan Campbell (UK), Bronze Medal - 2012 London Olympics; Single Sculls
  • Bow: Aleksandar Aleksandrov (Azerbaijan), 5th Place - 2012 London Olympics; Single Sculls
  • Cox: Ali Williams (UK)

The crew will be coached by Bill Barry (Silver Medal – 1964 Tokyo Olympics; Coxless Fours), assisted by Phil Rowley.

According to Coach Barry: “This is a great challenge. There are eight countries, eight languages, eight different styles, and eight egos each the size of a warehouse in the Great8. Together they form a great team rowing together for a decisive win.”

The rowers will be competing individually in singles and doubles races on Saturday October 20, and in the Men’s Championship Eights on Sunday, October 21. On Saturday the schedule is as follows: rowers Mahe Drysdale and Lassi Karonen will be competing in Men’s Single Sculls races at 2:30 PM; rowers Alan Campbell and Aleksander Aleksandrov, Iztok Cop and Olaf Tufte, Marcel Hacker and Glenn Ochal will be in the Men’s Double Sculls race at 2:45 PM. On Sunday the eight-person team will be competing in Men’s Championship Eights races at 2:55 PM as they look to repeat their 2009 Men’s Championship victory. The team is invited and supported by the HOC Committee.
